Eight days on the mountain from the western side, crossing the Shira Plateau and the southern circuit, which leaves time to acclimatise before the summit night.

Day by day

  1. Day 1Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate and walk through the forest to Mti Mkubwa camp.
  2. Day 2Climb out of the forest through heath to Shira 1 camp.
  3. Day 3Cross the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 camp.
  4. Day 4Climb to Lava Tower (4,600 m) and descend to Barranco camp.
  5. Day 5Scramble up the Barranco Wall and walk on to Karanga camp.
  6. Day 6Short walk to Barafu camp. Rest and an early dinner.
  7. Day 7Midnight start to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) around sunrise, then descend to Mweka camp.
  8. Day 8Walk down to Mweka Gate and drive back to Moshi.
